Social Service League Takes Top Award

G.O.L.D. (Gifts of Loving Donors) Diggers presented the 24th Annual Hats Off To San Diego on April 28th.   The event took place at the gorgeous Estancia Hotel & Spa in La Jolla.   The theme for the day was “As Time Goes By”.   The events began with a Champagne Social and Silent Auction.  The Mistress of Ceremonies was Geni Cavitt who welcomed everyone.  The Co-Chairs of the event were Gold Digger President Charlotte Perry and Gold Digger Executive Vice President Gerri Teyssier. Sonia Wilson was announced as GOLD Digger of the Year.

A presentation was made to two Beneficiaries.  Each one received $4000 for their work in the community.  The first was Autism Tree Project Foundation, which works with Education, Advocacy, and Early Intervention.  The second beneficiary was the Playwrights Project that empowers individuals to voice their stories through playwriting programs and theatre productions.

The program continued with the Betty Mabee Parade of Hats.  Every year there are 12 nonprofit organizations that create a hat using the theme. Each organization makes an elaborate hat and many of the hats were adorned with clocks in keeping with the theme, “ As Time Goes By”.  A representative of each organization modeled the hat on the runway and then strolled throughout the audience showing their creation.  Everyone in the audience was given a chance to vote for their favorite.   The Best themed hat went to B.A.B.E.S. that was modeled by Jamie Tyrone.  This Golden Shovel Award garnered $750 for Beating Alzheimer’s By Embracing Science.

Carol Fasching
modeled the 3rd Place Prospector Award. $1000 was awarded to Angels of Aseltine.  The 2nd Place 49er Award went to B.A.B.E.S. for $1500 and was modeled by Jamie Tyrone.  The 1st Place 18-Karat Gold Award went to Social Service League of La Jolla for $2,500.  Kristi Pieper modeled this winning hat.  Gold Diggers has a Wild Card Drawing for one of the organizations who wasn’t voted in the top three.  The wild card winner was Classics 4 KIDS taking home $750.  Each year a money hat is decorated with $500.  This year it was created by Jill Courtemanche and the lucky winner of this hat went to Carol DeBaca

The Gold Diggers is a local non-profit that has been in San Diego for 24 years.  They give to smaller charities that are instrumental in providing assistance to children, the elderly, crime victims and others.
